Church History

Along a narrow dirt road know as the Rocheport/Franklin road, and overlooking Sulphur Creek, a two-acre plot of ground was purchased from Andrew and Sarah Adams for the tidy sum of twenty-five dollars.  A single room “meeting house” was erected and named after the seven mineral springs (mostly sulphur) and thus the name, Sulphur Springs.

The church was dedicated, free of indebtedness in July, 1881 with 14 members. The next month August the 6th, it was declared to be a Baptist congregation with 37 members. It was affiliated with the Southern Baptist until 2005 when it was reorganized as an Independent Baptist Church after having been closed for almost a year.

The church went through many facelifts over the years, with the major undertaking of digging a basement by hand in 1924.  Yet, 127 years later the church remains basically the same.  It still retains the original log foundation and cross beams.  A gravel parking lot now stands where the hitching posts used to be, reminding of a time when members drove to church in horse and buggies.  They would spend most of the day praising the Lord, fellowshipping over a good meal and visiting with friends and neighbors. My good friend, Vencil Snell, told me that his father would throw hay on the wagon and leave their home near present day Midway and by the time they reached church the wagon would be full of people.  Central air and heating replaced the old wood stove that the men would come early and fire up for services.   Singing the Old Hymns of the faith, Old fashioned Bible preaching, in-depth Bible study and fervent prayer is what fires the services up now.  Rejecting the modern contemporary worship movement of today, the church retains its historical roots of old fashioned, God honoring, Bible believing worship.
